Family Recovery Center Education Department

 

Aiming High * - An evidence-based program provided to students in grades 1-8. This prevention program is designed to reduce risk factors and enhance protective factors related to alcohol, tobacco, and drugs as well as getting along peacefully with others. Nine classroom lessons cover goal setting, decision making, communicating bonding, and managing emotions. Students also participate in a community service project. These lessons are interactive and include parent components.

(Curriculum - Too Good For Drugs & Violence)

Stepping Stones * - Stepping Stones is a pregnancy prevention program for youth in middle and high school. Schools and families refer students who display at-risk behaviors for becoming sexually active and pregnant Students who already have children can be referred in order to prevent a second pregnancy. This program uses the Reducing the Risk curriculum covering abstinence and refusal skills. Awareness is also provided through newspapers and billboards.

(Curriculum - Reducing the Risk)

Step By Step * - Step By Step is an educational program to divert youth ages 12-17 from first time or continual involvement with the Juvenile justice system. Students participate in educational sessions based on the Too Good For Drugs & Alcohol curriculum. Topics include goal setting, assertiveness, conflict resolution, stress, drugs and alcohol- Lessons are provided to classrooms, small groups, and individuals who display at-risk indicators. Referrals are made by schools, Juvenile Court, Police Department, and families.

(Curriculum - Too Good For Drugs & Violence)

Youth Mentoring - Students who display positive leadership qualities learn the skills needed and benefits gained from mentoring younger students, Mentors selected by their teachers and administrators will be trained to read to elementary school students. This activity- is based on the Ohio Reads program and uses youth instead of adults as the mentors.

Olweus * - The Olweus Bullying Prevention program is a school-based program designed to prevent or reduce bullying in. elementary, middle, and jr. high schools. Efforts are directed toward improving peer relations and making the school a safe and positive place to learn. The Education Department is a consultant for schools implementing this program.

(Curriculum - Olweus Bullying Prevention Program)

Choices &Responsibilities - A 2.5 day education experience in a camp setting for youth participate in other Family Recovery programs. Format includes workshops, team building small groups, arts, and crafts Speakers cover many topics including substance abuse, teen pregnancy, conflict management, team building, and creative thinking. Depending on funding camps are held in the fall and spring each school year.

Teen Institute - A leadership program for youth-involved in their school Teen Institute program. Youth are trained in substance abuse issues, prevention strategies, and positive decision making. With this knowledge, they plan and implement awareness activities in their schools and communities.

All Stars * - A universal program for youth in grades 6-8 to prevent substance use and make a commitment to their ideal future. The curriculum is designed to delay the first time use of alcohol and prevent drug use and violence. The program promotes a belief in the best possible future, commitment to a positive lifestyle, wholesome standards, resiliency, a sense of belonging, and positive relationships with parents and other adults.

(Curriculum - All Stars)

Summer Program - Swimming, field trips, and other fun activities held during the summer months for participants of our school programs. Lunch is provided to all participants.

Columbiana County Youth Coalition - An initiative for youth in the county to implement programs in their schools and community organizations that will work toward reducing substance abuse among the teen population. Teams of students from different schools- plan activities in their own schools and communities to provide knowledge and awareness. Students can write mini-grants to obtain money for drug and alcohol prevention based activities

School Counseling - Individualized counseling at the school site for students provided by a licensed counselor. Family or school staff can refer students.
